Where to stay in Girona
Barri Vell

Girona is a perfectly sized city. You can walk around it easily, and it is full of unique historical places to visit in Girona, such as the incredible Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Basilica of San Felix, the Call de Girona (the Jewish quarter), or the Peixateries Velles Bridge, among others.

It is a very pleasant city to visit where you can choose different areas to stay. All of them are near the main tourist attractions, so you will not have problems moving around the city. Perhaps the choice will depend more on your budget.

These are the best areas to stay in Girona:

  • Barri Vell.
  • Mercadal.
  • Eixample.
  • Devesa-Güell.

Below, you can see what each of these areas has to offer.

Barri Vell, the most charming area to stay in Girona

The Barri Vell (Old Town) is truly stunning, and staying here adds something special to your experience. One unique aspect of Girona is that it’s considered one of Europe’s top cities for cyclists. As a result, the Old Town remains peaceful while coming to life with an active, sporty atmosphere in the morning.

Start your day early, greeted by the rich smell of coffee from the many specialty cafés in the city center. As you explore, don’t miss the chance to visit Girona’s two fortified enclosures: the Força Vella and the Eixample Medieval. Be sure to include the Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Jewish Quarter (Call Jueu) in your itinerary for a deeper dive into the city’s rich history.

In this area there are few hotels and, in addition, they are very expensive. Below, you can find a well-priced apartment that is a very good option and a great hotel.

  • $$: Bravissimo Cort Reial. It is a nice apartment, perfect for a stay in the center of Girona. It has everything you need for your stay and is a good size (70 m², with 2 bedrooms). It also has free wifi.

It has a very nice decoration, taken care of with detail and very free of unnecessary things. It has private parking, free Wi-Fi, a restaurant, a very nice terrace, and very good breakfast.

The best thing about the hotel is, without a doubt, its aroma… Delicious! The hotel is beautiful; its rooms are tastefully decorated, and it has a great breakfast, bar, restaurant, parking, spa, and pool. In addition, the treatment is magnificent.

Here, you’ll find Plaza de la Independencia, the Post Office Building, and, of course, some incredible gastronomic spots from the Roca universe—including Casa Cacao, Rocambolesc Bikineria, and their famous ice cream parlor. Everything is simply delicious!

If you’re looking for comfort or traveling by car and want easy parking, this is a great area to stay. Plus, there are plenty of green spaces for a stroll, like Plaza Miquel Santaló and Plaza Poeta Marquina.

Devesa-Güell, next to Girona’s main park

If you like green areas and want to be more in touch with nature but without leaving the city of Girona, we recommend the Devesa-Güell area to stay. You will find a relaxed atmosphere without going too far from the city center (which is south of the park).

The Devesa Park has more than 40 hectares full of centenary banana trees that make the work of lung for Girona. It is very close to the Ter River, which also humidifies the environment.
