Things to do in Cadaques, Spain
Now that we’ve unraveled the creative essence of Cadaques, it’s time to dive into the treasures this Mediterranean corner has in store. The main entrance of the church, decorated in a baroque style, welcomes you with intricate details that tell sacred stories. That door is a work of art in itself. As you walk through the doors, you are immersed in a solemn and serene space. The altars, side chapels, and religious artwork create an atmosphere of reverence and contemplation.
The church’s bell tower rises elegantly, offering panoramic views of the town and the sea. Climbing its narrow stairs is rewarded with a unique perspective of Cadaqués.
When night falls, the church is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere that adds to the charm of the historic center. An evening stroll around the square reveals a new perspective on this iconic building.
2. Stroll through the historic center of Cadaques
Cadaques’ ancient town is a delightful blend of lively squares, a white façade that gleams in the Mediterranean sun, and cobblestone lanes. You will be engulfed in the authenticity that has been maintained over the ages as soon as you reach this picturesque neighborhood.
The white houses with their striking blue klein doors were the ones that most intrigued me. I was enthralled. Perhaps because blue is my favorite hue and I relate to its power.
The following locations in Cadaqués are worth seeing:
- Once downstairs, enter the narrow street of Es Call, where the houses are the most interesting and take you back in time. Discover small craft stores and charming cafes that invite you to stop and enjoy the atmosphere.
- Casa Serinyana (the big white and blue house) is an old fishermen’s house, built in the 18th century. It is an emblematic example of local architecture. Its colorful doors and history make it a place of interest.
- Stroll along Carrer Nou. This main street takes you through the hustle and bustle of the historic center. Souvenir stores, art galleries, and cozy restaurants follow one another as you go.
- Plaza del Doctor Trèmols. A charming square that invites you to sit and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Here you will find terraces where you can taste the local gastronomy and contemplate the life of the town.
Don’t be afraid to lose your way in the narrow streets of this little town, as it is one of the best things to do in Cadaqués. Forget the map, and above all, turn off the GPS. Every corner hides surprises and numerous workshops and artists’ exhibitions. Discover alleys like Carrer Portitxó and Placeta d’en Riba that will transport you to the authenticity of the town.

3. Visit Salvador Dali House Museum, one of the best things to do in Cadaques

For me, at least, it was an intimate journey into the mind of Dalí and the deep connection he had with this place.
The Dalí House Museum is entirely Dalí’s own construction rather than a collection of art pieces. Over time, the artist purchased a number of modest fishermen’s cottages in Portlligat and turned them into a one-of-a-kind labyrinth that captured his surrealist vision.
The house consists of various rooms and passageways, each with its own theme and purpose. From the studio where Dalí gave free rein to his creativity to the room where he rested, each corner tells a story.
His studio is perhaps one of the most fascinating parts of the house. Preserved just as he left it, this space reveals the tools, brushes, and objects that inspired some of his most iconic works.
The exteriors of the house are also an integral part of the experience. The garden, with its sculptures and surrealist details, offers a unique connection between nature and Dalí’s artistic vision.
A swimming pool in the shape of a giant eye, located in front of the house, is one of the most distinctive features. Dalí considered the eye as a symbol of perception and vision, recurring elements in his work.
The house was home to Dalí and his muse, Gala. Exploring the spaces where they lived and created together adds an additional layer of emotion and understanding to the visit.

6. Hike to Portlligat from Cadaques
Follow the paths that lead to Portlligat, where the House Museum of Salvador Dalí awaits you with its peculiar architecture and sea views. It is a very pleasant walk, although you have to be a bit fit to walk these slopes.
We did it every day, as our accommodation was at the top, closer to the Dali house. A beautiful campsite with designer bungalows, Wecamp.

By car:
Cadaqués is connected via a winding mountain road, but every turn is worth it. From Barcelona, take the AP-7 freeway towards France until exit 4 (Figueres). Then follow the signs to Roses and then to Cadaqués. Be prepared to enjoy panoramic views along the way.
By bus:
If you prefer public transport, there are regular buses connecting Cadaqués with Figueres and Barcelona. Check the timetables to plan your trip conveniently.
Cadaqués is a picturesque town, and most of its streets are pedestrianized. We recommend parking in the designated areas outside the historic center. The P4 parking lot is a convenient option, and from there, you can explore the wonders of Cadaqués on foot.
