Where to stay in Canggu: Best areas and hotels

👩🏻‍⚕️ Let me remind you that it's very important to book good international insurance if you are going to a destination where you do not have medical coverage. We always use Heymondo travel insurance. You can get a 5% discount by booking it here.

Canggu is seriously one of the coolest places in Bali right now. It's a magnet for tourists and digital nomads alike, and it's easy to see why.

Whether you're swinging by for a quick trip or thinking about settling in for a while (I’ve got some solid advice if you're planning to live in Bali for a bit! ), this guide will help you choose a place to stay and suggest some great hotels.

However, Canggu has recently progressed considerably. Don't be surprised if you find some drawbacks, such as higher prices, some more traffic, and perhaps less of that traditional Bali charm.

Still, Canggu’s got so much to offer. It’s right by the beach, the food scene is incredible, and the vibe is super international. It's a great place to hang out and meet people from all over the world.

Where to stay in Canggu

Although Canggu is formed by the street of Batu Bolong and other nearby streets, we can include Berawa and Pererenan, the two areas located to the right and to the left, respectively, as part of Canggu.

For this reason, when talking about the different areas where to sleep in Canggu, we will consider Berawa, Canggu (Batu Bolong), and Pererenan. To make it easier for you to understand what I am talking about, in the following map I have marked the three different areas.

By the way, during your visit to this area of Bali, do not miss the best things to see and do in Canggu.

1. Berawa, the most developed area

Berawa is probably the most developed part of Canggu. If you’re looking for endless cafes, restaurants, massage centers, and shops, you’ll find them on every corner here. Berawa, in particular, has a higher concentration of businesses.

One of the big attractions in Berawa is Finn’s Beach Club, one of the most famous beach clubs in Bali. While I usually prefer more local spots, Finn’s is a nice place to grab a drink at sunset or if you’re in the mood to party.

A great thing to do in Berawa, especially at sunset or early in the morning, is to take a walk along the coast. In the evenings, you’ll often see Balinese families having a great time at the beach.

Ruko Cafe and Matcha Cafe Bali are two of my favorite breakfast places in Berawa. Tygr Berawa is an excellent lunch or dinner option if you like sushi too.

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Berawa, I’ve got a few hotel recommendations for you. There are plenty of great options, but these ones really stand out:

  • The Uma Guesthouse: This place offers rooms with private bathrooms and shared spaces, like a kitchen and a garden with a swimming pool. It’s a cozy spot with a nice, homey feel.
  • Mayana Villas: Perfect if you’re after a bit more privacy. You can choose from one, two, or three-bedroom villas, and they also have some shared areas for guests.
  • Own Villa: Technically, this one’s in Umalas, just a bit outside Berawa. I’m including it because it’s one of the top spots in Bali and definitely worth considering.

2. Canggu (Batu Bolong)

Batu Bolong is the main street in Canggu and really the heartbeat of the town. It’s bustling with a fantastic mix of restaurants, cafes, and shops. The area by the coast is lively too, with lots of bars right by the sea, and Batu Bolong Beach is a top spot for surfing.

One place you definitely don’t want to miss is Old Man’s, right across from Batu Bolong Beach. It’s perfect for an afternoon drink, and if you’re out at night, the party atmosphere is electric.

Echo Beach is another favorite of mine. Catching the sunset here is one of the best things you can do in Canggu. And while you’re there, check out The Breeze, a top beach club right on the beach. We often prefer the local stalls on the beach for a more relaxed vibe.

When it comes to food, there are a ton of great options. For authentic Balinese food, Warung Local is fantastic. If you’re in the mood for Japanese, Ji Restaurant Bali is a must. HoiAn by MeVui offers delicious Vietnamese cuisine. For sushi, Tygr Canggu is the place to go, and Fucina Bali does amazing Italian. Luigi’s Hot Pizza is also a great spot.

For breakfast and coffee, you’ve got some great choices: Ithaka Warung, Secret Spot, Crate, Copenhagen Canggu, and BGS are all excellent places to start your day.

I recommend some of the best hotels in Canggu, although there are many to choose from:

  • Bali Full Moon Guest House: This place offers private rooms and shared spaces. They also serve a fantastic breakfast, so you’ll start your day on a good note.
  • The Calmtree Bungalows: This spot has bungalows that can accommodate 2, 4, or 6 people, as well as a private villa. They have a lovely shared garden and a swimming pool, making it a great spot for relaxing.
  • Kano Canggu: Here you’ll find beautifully decorated private rooms. They also have a shared kitchen and a garden with a swimming pool, perfect for unwinding.

3. Pererenan, where to stay in Canggu if you want peace and quiet

Pererenan is an area that’s currently growing and developing. You’ll still find rice fields and open land alongside some local spots, giving it a more laid-back feel compared to places like Batu Bolong or Berawa. It’s a great choice if you’re after a quieter stay but still want access to plenty of restaurants and accommodations.

I would pick Pererenan if I had to choose between Berawa, Canggu, and Pererenan. At night, Canggu and Berawa can be quite noisy. Pererenan provides a calmer atmosphere, and it makes for a great base as can reach anywhere in minutes by hopping on a motorcycle.

I recommend some of the best hotels in Pererenan, although there are many options to choose from:

  • Euforia Guest House: This place has private rooms and a cozy garden with a pool. It’s a perfect spot to kick back and relax.
  • Tribal Bali: With its cool design, Tribal Bali offers both shared and private rooms. They also have some nice shared spaces, including a pool where you can chill out.
  • PNB Bali Villas: If you’re after more privacy, PNB Bali Villas has private rooms and villas. It’s a great option for a more secluded getaway.

4. Staying in the outskirts of Canggu

In all my trips to Bali, I’ve always stayed in Canggu. But I tend to steer clear of the tourist-heavy spots and prefer somewhere a bit more tranquil and rural. That’s why I usually stay on the outskirts, especially to the north of Raya Canggu, the main road that cuts through the area.

I recommend this option, especially if you’re planning to stay in Bali for a few weeks. You’ll find better prices and avoid the crowds. It’s really just a matter of personal preference, but I like being a bit removed from the tourist hotspots and getting around on a motorcycle. If you feel the same, this area could be perfect for you.

Below I recommend two hotels where I have stayed for several months and which I highly recommend.

  • Asung Guesthouse: Located between the northern parts of Canggu and Berawa, this guesthouse is run by a wonderfully friendly local family. They’re always ready to help and give you a taste of Balinese culture. You can stay in one of their rooms with a private bathroom, and you’ll also have access to a shared kitchen and a garden with a swimming pool.
  • Umah CinCin: If you wish to stay in a villa, Umah CinCin is a fantastic choice. They offer one large private villa and three smaller ones. I spent several months in one of the smaller villas and had an amazing stay. It’s about a 10-minute motorcycle ride from the heart of Canggu.
